The origins of this collaboration, however, go back years back to concerts in Spain as well as to a new production at the Vienna State Opera. Both projects allowed all participants to delve deeply into the collective thoughts and experiences that informed the construction of the Cathedral Lohengrin determined. On 2 July 1850 Wagner wrote in a letter to Liszt: "give the opera as it is, delete nothing!" In accordance with this wish the work was performed and recorded in its entirety.
