Replacement stylus for playing shellac discs

The RS78 stylus insert is suitable for the Sumiko MM pickup systems Rainier, Olympia, Moonstone, Wellfleet and Amethyst.

  • Scanning diamond: spherical (R 76μm)
  • Contact force: 5g (4-5.5g) 

Attention: The RS78 is the needle insert, not a complete cartridge! 


  • Upgrading MM cartridges

You can upgrade your Sumiko MM cartridge by simply replacing the stylus carrier. Important: all upgradeable cartridges are operated with the same tracking force - so no adjustment work is necessary after upgrading the stylus. 

As the Black Pearl and Pearl are identical apart from the stylus, a Pearl stylus upgrades the Black Pearl to a Pearl. The generators also differ between the Rainier and Amethyst models. Details of the differences can be found in this very nice report by Bernhard Rietschel from LowBeats magazine.

The advantages of the higher-quality needle insert: Lighter needle carriers, a naked diamond or a diamond with a better cut or a better polish of the diamond - against or with the structure of the diamond crystal lattice - improve the sound quality considerably. 


Upgrade steps Stereo styli

  • Rainier - simplest stylus carrier. Diamond with elliptical cut (r/R 8 x 18µm)
  • Olympia - better selected stylus diamond. Diamond with elliptical cut (r/R 8 x 18µm)
  • Moonstone - lighter aluminium needle carrier. Elliptical cut diamond (r/R 8 x 18µm)
  • Wellfleet - naked diamond (nude) with elliptical cut (r/R 8 x 18µm)
  • Amethyst - nude line-contact cut (r/R 5 x 20µm).
